MiFID II/MiFIR

The FIX Trading Community convened a number of working groups during the design/implementation phase of MiFID II. These covered algorithmic trading, transaction reporting, best execution, commission unbundling, clock synchronisation and transparency.

The outputs of this work helped firms to implement many of their MiFID II/MiFIR requirements and are still relevant today.

Key points are:

Pre-trade and Order Handling Obligations

FIX provides standardised message structures and fields to support MiFID II rules governing:

Order submission, modification and cancellation
Algorithm identification and oversight
Trading capacity and execution responsibility

MiFID‑specific attributes—such as client classification, trading capacity and execution method—are conveyed using existing FIX tags and clarified through FIX recommended practices, allowing firms to meet regulatory obligations without proprietary extensions.

Execution Transparency and Venue Reporting

FIX includes well‑defined fields and guidance to meet MiFID II execution transparency requirements, including:

Execution venue identification (e.g. MIC codes)
Broker capacity (agent, principal, matched principal)
Liquidity indicators and execution method

These are formalised in FIX recommended practices that explicitly align FIX field usage with MiFID II and MiFIR transparency obligations.

Post-trade Transparency (APA / CTP reporting)

FIX is widely used to support post‑trade transparency reporting under MiFIR, including:

Trade price, volume and instrument identification
Use of regulatory trade flags, deferrals and publication conditions
Support for Approved Publication Arrangements (APAs) and Consolidated Tape Providers (CTPs)

FIX Trading Community has published detailed guidance on how to represent MiFIR transparency data in FIX messages, covering both EU and UK regimes, with clear mapping to regulatory RTS requirements.

Transaction Reporting Support

Although MiFID II transaction reporting is ultimately submitted in regulator‑prescribed formats, FIX plays a key role in:

Inter‑firm communication between investment firms and with execution venues
Standardised exchange of data required to populate transaction reports

FIX implementation guidance defines how firms should pass transaction‑report‑relevant data internally and externally using FIX messaging, reducing ambiguity and operational risk.

Ongoing Regulatory Alignment and Governance

MiFID II support in FIX is not static. The FIX Trading Community maintains and updates MiFID‑related recommended practices, responds to ESMA and FCA consultations and adapts FIX standards to post‑MiFID amendments and refinements. This ensures the FIX Protocol remains aligned with evolving MiFID II / MiFIR policy while preserving interoperability and backward compatibility. Examples include consultation response work on post-trade transparency and transaction reporting.
