FIX & ISO

Global financial markets rely on multiple standards that need to work together, not compete, if firms are to achieve true interoperability at scale.

With that in mind, the FIX Trading Community has long engaged with ISO to align technical approaches and business meaning across frameworks—helping ensure that widely used trading and post-trade workflows can connect cleanly to the international standards that regulators and infrastructures increasingly reference.

The Overall Relationship

The FIX Trading Community has a long‑standing and active relationship with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), reflecting FIX’s role as a global, non‑profit standards body and the widespread regulatory reliance on ISO standards. FIX participates directly in ISO technical committees, contributes specifications for standardisation, and collaborates on interoperability between FIX standards and ISO frameworks—particularly ISO 20022.

Several FIX technical standards have been formally adopted by ISO, ensuring their long‑term stability and global recognition:

  • FIX TagValue encoding and session layer
The core FIX TagValue syntax and FIX Session Layer have been standardised as ISO 3531 (Part 1 and Part 2), recognising FIX’s messaging model as an international standard for financial communications.
  • Simple Binary Encoding (SBE)
FIX’s high‑performance binary encoding, designed for low‑latency trading and market‑data use‑cases, has been adopted as ISO/IEC 25390. This provides a common, non‑proprietary binary encoding standard usable beyond FIX itself.

These ISO adoptions reflect a deliberate strategy by FIX to make core technical components available as open international standards, usable across markets and technologies.

FIX and ISO 20022

FIX is an active participant in the ISO 20022 ecosystem through:

  • Engagement in ISO TC68 (Banking, Securities and Financial Services)
  • Participation in the Registration Management Group (RMG) and relevant Securities Standards Evaluation Groups
  • Contributions to working groups revising the ISO 20022 metamodel and governance processes

A central theme of FIX’s work with ISO 20022 has been interoperability rather than replacement - alignment of business semantics, practical mapping and coexistence. This has resulted in:

  • Submission of FIX concepts and components into ISO contexts
  • Development of message‑by‑message mappings between FIX and ISO 20022 for regulatory use‑cases such as consolidated tapes
  • Use of FIX Orchestra to generate machine‑readable artefacts that support semantic equivalence between FIX and ISO 20022 models

ISO 20022 “Part 9” and Modern Encodings

FIX has been closely involved in discussions around ISO 20022 Part 9, which introduces encoding independence into ISO 20022. This aligns closely with FIX’s long‑standing approach, where the same business model can be represented in various encodings (e.g., TagValue, FIXML, JSON or SBE). FIX has positioned this as an enabler for co‑existence between FIX and ISO 20022, potentially allowing mixed message sets within a unified technical framework.

Collaboration Beyond Messaging

FIX is working with ISO on carbon markets standardisation, particularly in relation to:

  • Tradeable carbon credits as financial instruments
  • The development of consistent identifiers for carbon credits (analogous to ISIN or DTI)
  • The potential use of FIX as the transactional messaging layer, alongside ISO standards governing definitions, certification and governance

This work brings FIX into collaboration with ISO committees involved in sustainability and carbon markets and has increased engagement with international bodies such as development banks and policy organisations.

There is also engagement on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly regarding governance and risk frameworks for AI, complementing FIX’s work on practical application in trading workflows, data quality and automation.
